U.S. tightens restrictions on birth tourism and warns of visa cancellations

The possibility of traveling to the United States to give birth is facing increased scrutiny for Dominican citizens after the Donald Trump administration strengthened restrictions against so-called “birth tourism,” a practice in which foreigners travel to the U.S. to have children who may obtain U.S. citizenship by birth.

The State Department reiterated that B1/B2 tourist and business visas cannot be used primarily for the purpose of giving birth in the United States. Those who misuse their visas may face cancellation and restrictions on future entry.

As part of the effort, the U.S. government created the Working Group for the Prevention of Birth Tourism to review the activities of nonimmigrant visa holders and identify potential cases. According to the State Department, more than 600 visas have already been canceled in connection with birth tourism.

Authorities are also investigating companies and networks that promote these trips by offering services such as visa assistance and hospital coordination. They warned that travelers who conceal the true purpose of their trip, provide false information, or overstay their authorized period could lose their visas and future eligibility to enter the United States.

The State Department said Secretary of State Marco Rubio has broad authority to revoke visas when they are found to have been misused and warned that the crackdown on birth tourism will continue.
