UN Chief António Guterres praises Dominican Republic’s key role in Haiti stabilization efforts

Santo Domingo.- United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in the Dominican Republic on Monday for an official visit that includes a meeting with President Luis Abinader and a working agenda focused on the ongoing crisis in Haiti.

Upon his arrival at Las Américas International Airport (AILA), Guterres expressed gratitude to the Dominican government and people for their support of international efforts aimed at restoring stability in neighboring Haiti, highlighting the country’s key role in advancing multilateral initiatives to address the crisis.

“On behalf of the United Nations, I want to thank the Dominican Republic for its tremendous generosity,” Guterres said. “The Dominican Republic’s support has allowed us to quickly establish a support mission in Haiti for the newly launched Gang Suppression Force, which could not have been achieved so rapidly without the Dominican Republic’s commitment, generosity, and cooperation.”

The UN chief specifically recognized the Dominican Republic’s contribution to the approval of the United Nations Security Council resolution that authorized the creation of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF), a multinational effort designed to help Haitian authorities combat escalating gang violence and restore security.

Guterres’ visit comes as Haiti continues to face a deepening security and humanitarian crisis, with armed gangs controlling large areas of the country and disrupting essential services. The Dominican Republic has repeatedly called for greater international involvement, warning that instability in Haiti poses significant challenges for regional security.

In recent years, the Dominican government has maintained an active diplomatic campaign before the United Nations, the Organization of American States (OAS), and other international forums, urging the global community to assume greater responsibility in addressing the Haitian crisis.

Beyond its diplomatic efforts, the Dominican Republic has provided concrete support to international stabilization initiatives, including medical assistance for personnel deployed in Haiti, logistical and transit support, and the establishment of a support office for the Gang Suppression Force within Dominican territory.

During his stay, Guterres is expected to meet with President Abinader to discuss regional security, international cooperation, and ongoing efforts to support stability and development in Haiti before continuing his agenda in the neighboring country.

The visit underscores the growing international focus on Haiti’s crisis and highlights the Dominican Republic’s role as a key regional partner in efforts to promote security, humanitarian assistance, and long-term stability in the Caribbean nation.
