Union leader warns motorcycle growth has become national security concern
Santo Domingo.- Union leader and attorney Mario Díaz warned that the rapid growth of motorcycle taxis and the increasing number of motorcycles in the Dominican Republic have become major challenges for road safety, urban mobility, and public security. He urged the Government’s Transportation Cabinet to adopt urgent measures to address what he described as a national crisis.
Díaz proposed a temporary two-year ban on motorcycle imports as part of a broader strategy to regulate the sector, reduce traffic accidents, and combat crimes involving motorcycles. He argued that the uncontrolled expansion of motorcycles has contributed to thousands of road accidents, traffic violations, congestion, and criminal activity across the country. He also called for stricter licensing requirements, better registration systems, stronger oversight of motorcycle taxi operations, and restrictions on motorcycle traffic on major highways and high-speed roads.
The union leader further advocated for changes to traffic laws to provide greater legal protection for drivers involved in accidents caused by reckless motorcyclists. He stressed the need for nationwide road safety campaigns, increased police enforcement, and tougher penalties for traffic violations. According to Díaz, the motorcycle taxi issue should be treated as a national priority tied to public health, citizen safety, and urban order.

Speaking from the fact that I was a certified Police Officer and familiar with the Rules Of the Road, I am not Dominican but I am a current resident and a holder of a Dominican Drivers License. The major problem I see with traffic in the Dominican Republic no one follows the rules of the road. Secondly the Police in this country do not enforce the law on Dominicans but they do on foreigners. If the police see a violation from a motorcycle and this driver does not have a drivers license or insurance the motorcycle needs to be seized or impounded till which time the driver has a license and Insurance. No exceptions. I have seen hundreds of violations by motorcycles one being they never stop for a stop light at an intersection unless there is a police officer stationed there and then some sneak through. Total apathy when it comes to enforcement. I have witnessed a female police officer playing on her phone instead of enforcing the law. Allowing Buses and other traffic to enter a one way street going the wrong way and doing nothing about it. This is pure laziness and not doing their job.
Laziness, corruption and uneducated people
Just sit at an intersection with a car crusher, crosses on the red?. Into the shredder it goes. If they argue. include the driver
