Verón-Punta Cana planning proposal focuses on sustainable transportation

Verón-Punta Cana.- The proposed Verón-Punta Cana Territorial Planning Plan (POT) aims to reshape urban development in the Dominican Republic’s leading tourism destination by placing sustainable mobility at the center of future growth.

The plan calls for a hierarchical road network that includes expressways, arterial, collector, and local roads, while expanding infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transportation to reduce dependence on private vehicles.

Based on the principles of Sustainable Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), the proposal seeks to create a more connected city by linking residential neighborhoods with employment centers, commercial areas, public services, and transportation through integrated pedestrian walkways and cycling routes.

A key component of the initiative is the creation of the district’s first formal bicycle lane network, designed as part of the public transportation system rather than recreational infrastructure. The bike lanes would connect neighborhoods, workplaces, public facilities, and transit stations, while meeting standards for width, lighting, signage, and physical separation from vehicle traffic.

The plan also establishes a clear road hierarchy to improve traffic flow and prevent congestion by assigning specific functions to different types of roads.

In addition, protected corridors are proposed along Frank Rainieri Boulevard and the Verón-Bávaro Ring Road, where pedestrian paths, bike lanes, and urban amenities would be developed. Permanent construction and parallel service roads would be prohibited within these areas to preserve their transportation function and improve road safety.
