Weather forecast: downpours and heat in the Dominican Republic
A tropical wave and a trough in the upper levels of the troposphere will cause heavy local downpours in the interior of the country this Sunday, accompanied by thunderstorms and wind gusts, reported the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet).
In Greater Santo Domingo, including the National District, occasional cloud cover and possible showers are expected in the morning, while hot conditions will prevail in the afternoon.
The weather report is valid from 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 6, 2026 until 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
During the early morning hours, some showers and thunderstorms are expected over eastern and northeastern provinces and the Caribbean coast. However, conditions will change during the afternoon due to a combination of local effects, a tropical wave, and a trough
Showers will increase during the afternoon
Local effects: the impact of a tropical wave and a trough in the upper levels of the troposphere will cause heavy downpours inland, accompanied by thunderstorms and wind gusts.
Rainfall is expected, especially over towns in Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Duarte, northern Azua, San Juan, Elías Piña, Dajabón, Santiago Rodríguez, southern Santiago, and Monte Cristi, as well as other nearby locations.
Temperatures will remain hot, with a stifling heat index. Therefore, Indomet recommends drinking water frequently, wearing light, loose-fitting, or light-colored clothing, and avoiding direct sun exposure without proper protection.
Pregnant women, children, and the elderly are more vulnerable to the effects of high temperatures.
Minimum temperatures will range from 24°C to 26°C, while maximum temperatures will range from 34°C to 36°C.
Forecast for Monday
Tomorrow, Monday, after the passage of the tropical wave, there will be enough humidity that, together with the interaction of the wind with the orography and the incidence of the trough at height, increases in cloud cover will develop during the afternoon.
Local downpours, thunderstorms,, and gusty winds are expected in the the provinces of the Central Mountain Range, the southeast, and the border area.
Among the provinces identified by Indomet are El Seibo, Hato Mayor, San José de Ocoa, La Vega, Elías Piña, and San Juan.
Isolated clouds with clear intervals are forecast for Santo Domingo and the National District.
Less rain and Saharan dust on Tuesday
The trough is forecast to move away on Tuesday, so the expected rainfall will be more localized and of lower intensity over the southeastern provinces, the Central Mountain Range, the border area, and the northwest.
The rain will occur during the afternoon, with some isolated thunderstorms and wind gusts until the early evening hours.
In addition, a moderate concentration of Saharan dust is expected to enter the area.
In Greater Santo Domingo, occasional cloud cover is expected, with isolated showers.

In Constanza, local downpours, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are expected this afternoon. High temperatures will range from 27°C to 29°C, and lows from 13°C to 15°C.
Peravia will have scattered clouds and isolated morning showers. The afternoon will be hot, with highs between 33°C and 35°C and lows between 24°C and 26°C.
San Pedro de Macorís will experience occasional cloud cover and possible morning showers, with maximum temperatures between 33°C and 35°C and minimum temperatures between 23°C and 25°C.
La Romana will have occasional increases in cloud cover and possible morning showers, with maximum temperatures between 34°C and 36°C and minimum temperatures between 23°C and 25°C.
