Weather Update: COE expands yellow alert amid heavy rain from tropical wave
Santo Domingo.- The Emergency Operations Center (COE) increased the number of provinces under yellow alert to five, including the National District, while maintaining 16 provinces under green alert due to weather conditions associated with an active tropical wave.
According to the National Meteorological Office (INDOMET), the tropical wave is gradually increasing humidity over the Dominican Republic and maintaining a northeasterly wind, conditions that are expected to produce downpours, thunderstorms and possible wind gusts.
Numerical forecast models indicate rainfall accumulations of between 50 and 100 millimeters, with higher amounts possible in isolated areas. The rainfall could result in urban flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and along roads and other transit routes.
Yellow alert
The provinces and territory placed under yellow alert are:
- Santo Domingo Province
- National District
- San Cristóbal
- Monte Plata
- Peravia
Green alert
The 16 provinces under green alert are:
- Samaná
- San José de Ocoa
- San Pedro de Macorís
- Sánchez Ramírez
- Espaillat
- Puerto Plata
- Santiago Rodríguez
- Valverde
- Azua
- El Seibo
- Hato Mayor
- La Altagracia
- La Romana
- María Trinidad Sánchez
- Dajabón
- Monte Cristi
The COE urged residents in areas under alert to remain attentive to official updates and take precautions against possible flooding. Authorities specifically advised people not to cross rivers, streams or ravines with elevated water levels and to avoid using beaches and other bathing areas in provinces under alert.
Regarding maritime conditions, the COE reported that during the next 24 to 72 hours, conditions along the Atlantic coast from Cabo Engaño to Cabo Francés Viejo will require caution. Operators of fragile, small and medium-sized vessels are advised to navigate carefully due to the expected sea conditions.
