Dominican Republic regains relay gold medal after disqualification is overturned

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic officially recovered the gold medal in the 4×100-meter mixed relay at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026 after competition authorities upheld the country’s appeal and overturned the team’s initial disqualification.

The decision restored the Dominican quartet of Mayobanex de Óleo, Fiordaliza Cofil, José González and Liranyi Alonso to first place with a winning time of 40.89 seconds, validating the result they achieved on the track at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium.

The team had originally been disqualified minutes after the race for an alleged baton exchange violation, a ruling that temporarily promoted Jamaica to first place, Cuba to second and Puerto Rico to third. The Dominican delegation immediately challenged the decision, requesting a review of the race footage and officials’ findings.

Following the technical review, competition officials reversed the disqualification and reinstated the Dominican Republic as the gold medal winner. Jamaica was awarded the silver medal with a time of 41.06 seconds, while Cuba claimed bronze in 41.18 seconds. Puerto Rico moved to fourth place, while Mexico was the only team ultimately disqualified.

The ruling also increased the host nation’s gold medal tally to 24 at the time of the decision, adding another title to the Dominican Republic’s medal count at the Games.
