FEDA launches agroecology projects in Loma Solimán

Santo Domingo.- The Special Fund for Agricultural Development (FEDA) is spearheading agroecology projects to revitalize Loma Solimán, a remote area spanning Montecristi, Puerto Plata, and Valverde provinces. Once thriving with coffee production, the region suffered devastation from coffee rust disease.
At an event hosted by the Loma de Solimán Farmers Association, over 60 local farmers received training in agroecology, aimed at merging sustainable ecosystems with agricultural productivity. FEDA distributed 30,000 seedlings, including 20,000 coffee plants and 10,000 cocoa plants, along with essential farming tools to aid recovery efforts.
Hecmilio Galván, FEDA’s executive director, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting rural producers. Community members, who have faced crop losses and reduced forest cover, expressed hope for a brighter future. Juan Alberto Peguero, the association’s president, emphasized the critical link between coffee cultivation and water supply, highlighting the importance of these initiatives for the region’s restoration.
