Foreign Minister proposes strategies to address economic challenges at ECLAC
Lima, Perú.- During the Dialogue of Foreign Ministers and High-Level Authorities of Latin America and the Caribbean in Lima, Peru, Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez outlined key proposals to reshape the region’s international framework. Speaking at the Fortieth Session of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Álvarez emphasized the need for a peace-centered approach, sustainable financing, and improved regional trade integration.
Álvarez’s first recommendation was to reinforce Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace, essential for social and economic development amid current geopolitical challenges. His second proposal focused on securing long-term development financing with favorable conditions, ensuring countries can access sufficient funds to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) without jeopardizing financial stability.
Lastly, Álvarez stressed the need for stronger regional trade integration to unlock the region’s potential by better utilizing natural resources and enhancing value chains. He proposed creating a more interconnected trade bloc that maximizes the region’s contributions. Concluding his speech, Álvarez suggested the Dominican Republic host the 41st ECLAC session in 2026, a proposal currently under review.
