With a court win at home, former Dominican president eyes films abroad

Santo Domingo.- While an Appellate Court in the Dominican capital on Monday ruled yet another victory for him and the embattled foundation he created, former president Leonel Fernandez tours the Big Apple to promote his country’s new-found fame as the film mecca of the Caribbean.

The National District Court of Appeals ruled against the challenge filed by the president of the minority party Al-País, Guillermo Moreno, who filed money laundering charges against Fernandez and the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode).

The Court of Appeals upheld a lower court ruling handed down on July 5 against the lawsuit filed by Moreno, who had challenged the National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso’s decision to reject the case.

In New York meanwhile Fernandez visited the Maurice Kanbar Film and Television Institute, and the Tisch School of Arts at the University of New York, one of the most prestigious cinema schools.

The former president’s visit included a meeting with Institute director John Tintori, which included Dominican Film Festival director Omar de la Cruz and creative and Dominican Republic Global Film Festival PR director Yvette Marichal.
