Defense chief says all quiet at the border; announces military facility

Santo Domingo.- Defense minister Sigfrido Pared on Mondayaffirmed that the military continues bolstering security along the border withHaiti, where everything is under control without reports of incidents.

He said the Army and the Border Security (Cesfront) have increasedthe number of agents gradually, from 3,000 to 4,000, to avert a repeat of “recentregrettable events” at the border.

As to the shuttered markets along the border’s severaltowns, Pared said it was due to a lack of products, not a lack of safety.

Pared, speaking after signing an agreement for the new TourismSecurity Agency (Cestur) to bolster safety for tourists, also announced theribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday for a military facility at Elías Piña(west), which he affirms counts with the modern requirement required to providegreater security along the border.
