Amendment: Official embezzlers face up to 10 years in prison

Santo Domingo.- The Senate on Wednesday passed the bill to amend the Law on Financial Statement and Illicit Enrichment, with penalties of up to 10 years in prison for officials convicted of embezzlement.

The Law’s amendment forces officials to include their spouses in his statement, and up to two years in prison and a fine of up to 40 minimum salaries (more than RD$380,000) for government for officials who provide false data.

Senator Charley Mariotti asked Senate president Reinaldo Pared and Chamber of Deputies president Abel Martínez to coordinate to approve the legislation. The bill now passes to the Chamber of Deputies, which is expected to pass it.
