Dominican Republic soldiers, cops in 90% of organized crime cases

Santo Domingo.- Members of Dominican Republic’s military and National Police are involved in a stunning 90% of organized crime cases, National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso revealed Wednesday.

"In most cases of murders and major drug trafficking cases there are police and military. It’s a situation that requires intervention to another level and needs measures taken from other levels of state which isn’t the Judiciary," the official said.

"It’s alarming and very disturbing that people with whom one investigates daily are being involved in crime which they are called to investigate,” Reynoso said.

Speaking to reporters at the Iberoamerican gathering on violence against women, the official said four soldiers, including a captain and a second lieutenant, form part of group apprehended with 450 bricks of cocaine at Las Americas Airport Tuesday morning.
