Indotel’s broadband initiative for the southern region

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel) has initiated a project aimed at providing broadband internet access through fiber optic networks to residents in 23 municipalities and 44 municipal districts across the southern region of the country.

These communities are situated in the provinces of Azua, Bahoruco, Barahona, Elías Piña, Independencia, Pedernales, San Cristóbal, San José de Ocoa, and San Juan, with an estimated beneficiary population of approximately 142,605 individuals.

The project, titled “Deployment and Operation of Internet Access Networks in the Southern Region,” commenced in the municipality of Tábara Abajo, Azua province. The launch was led by Vice President Raquel Peña and Nelson Arroyo, President of the Indotel Board of Directors.

Arroyo emphasized that providing quality connectivity to the southern region is a significant milestone that will positively impact the socioeconomic situation and create new opportunities for residents. He highlighted the project as an investment in progress, equal opportunities, and sustainable development, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving the lives of Dominicans.

The project represents one of the largest investments made by the Dominican State, totaling US$19,381,440.42. It is expected to drive technological, social, and economic development in the southern region. Additionally, the project will offer free internet access to 343 public institutions in the targeted areas, including schools, municipal offices, hospitals, and police detachments. Moreover, vulnerable populations residing in the coverage area will have access to an affordable internet plan with speeds of 10 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload for a cost of $299 pesos, taxes included.

President Abinader has established the universal right of access to broadband internet and the productive use of information and communication technologies (ICT) through Decree 539-20. This initiative aims to bridge the digital divide and foster various projects focused on enhancing connectivity nationwide.
