Haiti tops Dominican Republic in traffic accident fatalities rate

Santo Domingo.- Traffic accidents are the second leading cause of death in the Dominican Republic, following chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes, according to the Ministry of Public Health. The country ranks second in regional traffic-related mortality, with 27 deaths per 100,000 people, a rate double the global average and surpassed only by Haiti, with 31 deaths per 100,000.

The Ministry stresses the urgent need for a coordinated, multi-sector approach to improve road safety and lessen the burden on the health system. The latest epidemiological bulletin reports that, in 2023, traffic accidents were the second highest cause of death among men, particularly affecting those aged 20-49.

The bulletin further identifies men as accounting for 87.6% of traffic fatalities, with young adults (15-29 years) most impacted. Provinces such as La Vega, Monsignor Nouel, La Altagracia, and Samaná reported the highest mortality rates. The Ministry emphasizes the importance of collaborating with international bodies like the WHO, improving infrastructure, and strengthening educational programs to enhance road safety.
