U.S. to sign open skies agreement with Dominican Republic in the coming days
Santo Domingo—The Dominican Republic and the United States have reached a consensus on the signing of an open skies agreement, which will reduce airfares and expand air connectivity.
According to the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, the protocol signing will be announced in the next few days by the U.S. Embassy in the country.
He hopes the agreement will reduce air transport fares, increase competitiveness in the market, and facilitate tourism between the United States and the Dominican Republic, according to El Dia.
He pointed out that air connectivity and the cost of airline tickets have become the main challenge to attracting more tourists to this destination since, in some cases, it can be more expensive for them to buy a ticket to the country than to other competing destinations in terms of tourism.
In that sense, Collado described as exaggerated that a Dominican has to pay up to US$1,700 for a flight between New York and the Dominican Republic during the Christmas season.
The head of Mitur is convinced that airfares will become cheaper with the open skies policy.
He cited the effects created by the Arajet airline in Latin America, where ticket prices are dropping in the Dominican Republic. He expects this to happen in the United States when applying the open skies policy.
Another territory for the omnipotent United States to do whatever its wants. Goodbye DR.
Some people are just naturally born idiots. I would take the time to explain the benefits of this agreement however, it is apparent to me that you lack the intelligence to understand it in its entirety.
Hope this agreement will finally open the door for US Customs and Border Protection to establish Preclearance at Dominican airports. The Preclearance will allow more origin to destination direct nonstop flights, lower fares, and more US cities into the routes to/from the RD. It will be a great benefit to passengers. It will bring more money into the Dominican economy.
I flew from (STI) Santiago Cibao Airport DR; to NYC (JFK) on 12/03/2023 .. I have GLOBAL Entry & Pre Check: But does not worked I had to took off my shoes, my belt and their behavior was not very nice
An AMAZING way to begin 2024!
I hope the pre-clearance is not approved. We do not want to be not even a tad more the frontier Juan Bosch told in La frontera imperial.
There needs to be more flights directly to Puerto Plata from the US. These flights have exceeded 1000 over last two years. American flight from Philly to PoP through Miami 585 lowest in a long time. We need Southwest to expand to PoP.
Bob, the problem isn’t with expansion from the airline’s perspective. The issue is the sky-high cost of landing fees imposed upon the airlines by AERODOME, which is the exclusive operator of General Luperon, aka Puerto Plata airport. New and hip carriers such as Arajet would like to offer service via PoP. However, it has be more cost-effective for them. The government should but won’t step in to motivate AERODOME to lower the fees, thus PoP continues to offer limited and HIGHLY expensive flights.
Goodbye DR more american ppl will invade , raise property tx like US virgin islands and PR keep the poor poor
