Senate chief’s presidential bid leads to imports of older cars

Santo Domingo.- With the vote of most of the deputies, Senate president Reinaldo Pared made good on his promise, as ruling PLD party presidential hopeful, to used car importers to raise the import limit on used vehicles from 5 to 7 years.

At a March 12 rally with members of the National Auto Dealers Association (Anadive), its president Luis Taveras promised Pared to work for his presidential bid in exchange for pushing the legislation through Congress.

"Hands that give receive. I want you to understand, President (Pared), if you make a pledge to our industry, the three associations present here will formally work with you within our means to help you be President. What we want is not a trade off, but help so that this vibrant, dynamic sector in the economy may resurge," Taveras said.

Faced with the offer, Pared immediately instructed senators Tommy Galán, Amílcar Romero and Charles Mariotti to resubmit the piece.
