Corporán received 149 out of 186 votes, making him the second most voted candidate in the elections held on June 11. As a result, he will join the 18 independent experts responsible for promoting the inclusion and rights of people with disabilities worldwide.
“The Dominican Republic is confident that Magino Corporán Lorenzo will play a pivotal role in advancing the rights and opportunities for people with disabilities, given his distinguished national and international career,” the Dominican Foreign Ministry stated. Corporán has served as a regional and global advisor for the World Organization of Persons with Disabilities (OMPD) and as the executive director of the National Council on Disability (CONADIS).
The ministry highlighted that by supporting Corporán’s candidacy, the Dominican Republic, through MIREX officials and its permanent mission to the UN in New York, reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights of people with disabilities and their families on a global scale.
Corporán expressed his dedication to enhancing the role of the CRPD by promoting best practices and fostering cooperation between States and other UN human rights bodies.
About Magino Corporán
Magino Corporán Lorenzo was instrumental in the enactment of the first Disability Law 21-91 and served as the inaugural executive director of the National Council for Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Social Integration of Disability (CONAPREM) from 1991 to 1996.
He also championed the World Plan of Action and the Decade of Disabled Persons (1983-92), advocated for the UN Standard Rules on equal opportunities for people with disabilities (1993), and has been a proponent of labor inclusion since 1983.
With over 50 years of activism, Corporán has been involved in the creation of social organizations, the development of leaders, labor inclusion, universal accessibility, accessible tourism, equality, independent living, awareness, adapted sports, and inclusive public policies at the municipal and business levels. He has also worked on harmonizing national regulations with the International Convention on the Human Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is a UN body comprising independent experts who monitor the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities by States Parties. The committee consists of 18 experts elected by the States Parties to the Convention, each serving a four-year term.
