Safty tips for expats in the Dominican Republic

For the most part, the Dominican Republic is safe, with very little violent crime. Most incidents tend to be crimes of opportunity.

Sometimes you hear stories of expats living abroad being victims of crimes, whether it’s a robbery, getting scammed by a supposed boyfriend or girlfriend, or being drugged by someone.

In most cases, a closer look at the backstory reveals that the expat could have taken steps to prevent the crime or at least reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

That being said, incidents can still occur, but as noted earlier, there are steps you can take to lower your risk of becoming a victim.

Here some safety tips for Expats:

  • Live in secure neighborhoods (e.g., gated communities or areas with a security presence).
  • Don’t flash wealth—avoid wearing flashy jewelry.
  • Use trusted transportation (Uber is available in major cities).
  • Secure your home with locks, alarms, and, if possible, a local security service.
  • Build local connections—neighbors and friends can provide valuable tips and help in emergencies.
  • Watch your alcohol consumption: Know your limits when it comes to drinking in public. If you are drunk or intoxicated, your ability to make sound decisions and be aware of your surroundings diminishes, making it easier for opportunists to take advantage.
  • Be careful with dating apps: Scammers frequent dating apps like Tinder, targeting foreigners and posing as potential romantic interests to extract money or personal data. Always verify the identity of individuals you meet online through video calls before meeting in person, and choose public, well-lit locations for your first few dates. And if you do decide to go on a date, inform a friend or family member of your plans, who you are meeting, and where.
  • Be cautious with financial transactions: Carry minimal cash to avoid becoming a target. Be discreet when withdrawing money from ATMs. Also, withdraw money during daylight hours and in a secure location to reduce the risk of potential theft.

The Dominican Republic is mainly safe for expats when you take common-sense precautions. Following the tips outlined above, you can significantly reduce the chance of becoming a victim and enjoy a secure, fulfilling life in this vibrant country.

Dont drive unless you have no other option and never stop at red lights at night in poorly lit intersections., slow down check for clear…go. Dont trust the police, most cant even read and are just see you as a profit margin for bribes. Carry pepper spray. Learn spanish but dont speak it until you know them better. Dont give money to beggars, Dont lend money to locals, you’ll never get it back. Never pay for anything in advance. Dont shop in stores that dont have the prices clearly displayed. Only use lawyers you know have actually helped someone you know. do use the same routes of travel at the time repeatedly

And beware of any fake lawyers or private immigration agencies that use foreigners’ funds for anything other than visa applications. Take the Maria Abreu Immigration Agency, for example. Foreigners should be wary of these types of scams.
