Government investments exceed RD$20 billion in Santo Domingo over five years

Santo Domingo.- Over the past five years, President Luis Abinader’s government has completed more than 100 projects in the National District, investing over RD$20 billion to modernize Santo Domingo and improve the quality of life for its residents. These efforts have impacted critical areas including public transportation, healthcare, housing, sports, water, sanitation, and road infrastructure, consolidating the capital as the nation’s political, economic, and social hub.

Key transportation projects include the RD$260 million expansion of Line 1 of the Santo Domingo Metro, new trains, and the construction of a pedestrian corridor connecting Lines 1 and 2. These upgrades, supported by the French Development Agency, aim to reduce wait times and ease traffic congestion for thousands of daily commuters. Road infrastructure projects, such as the Plaza de la Bandera Tunnel (RD$6 billion), the Isabel Aguiar overpass, and improvements along Avenida República de Colombia (RD$10 billion), further enhance mobility across the city.

In healthcare, investments include the RD$2.175 billion renovation of Dr. Luis Eduardo Aybar Health City, the restoration of Padre Billini Hospital, and the RD$419 million INCART Pediatric Oncology Unit. Social and urban development projects, such as Nuevo Domingo Savio (RD$5.086 billion) and Cristo Park (RD$560 million), have revitalized vulnerable communities, creating recreational spaces, housing, and basic services. The Colonial City has also benefited from a RD$5.4 billion restoration, boosting cultural tourism. Collectively, these initiatives represent a historic transformation of Santo Domingo, generating jobs, promoting urban development, and reinforcing the government’s commitment to a modern, thriving capital.

The government should invest all of it in cultural reform. Cultural pride! Learning to drive, voluntarily picking up trash, and crime prevention would be a great start. The goal should be courteous drivers and, most importantly, living without bars on your windows. Achieve this, and the DR would be a wonderful place, overflowing with investment.
