No jailhouse rock for Dominican pop stars in lockup

Santo Domingo.- Tipped off that several artists being held in prisons had plans to perform concerts, Justice minister Radhames Jimenez on Wednesday banned festivities by inmates in all holding facilities in the entire country.

In a statement, Jimenez instructed Prisons director Mario Acosta and Model Penitentiary Management coordinator Roberto Santana to prohibit the activities citing safety, prudence and common sense concerns.

"We also inform you that as in previous occasions the Justice Ministry will determine which (parties) are intended to provide recreation for the inmates and families to share," Jimenez said, stressing that the measure must be carried out immediately.

At least three music stars are currently being held in the country’s jails, on charges of battery against women and drug trafficking.
