OMSA’s vision for the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- The General Administrator of the Metropolitan Bus Services Operator (OMSA), Radhamés González, has emphasized the Dominican Republic’s trajectory towards expanding integrated transportation systems.

González highlighted the commencement of this initiative with the inauguration of the Los Alcarrizos Cable Car, introducing a single fare system that permits access to both the cable car and buses within the OMSA Integrated System. He indicated plans to extend this system beyond Santo Domingo, citing Santiago as an example, where the first phase of the Cable Car is already operational, with expectations for the monorail to follow suit.

In addition, González emphasized the importance of establishing exclusive lanes across the country to enhance the frequency and efficiency of mass public transportation services.

Reflecting on OMSA’s evolutionary journey, which began in 1979 as the National Land Transportation Office (ONATRATE), González noted its transformation from a Presidential dependency to an Office and now to a public company under the name Metropolitan Bus Services Operator (OMSA).

González outlined ongoing plans and projects within this new phase of OMSA, including the transition to electronic payment systems for all buses and the procurement of electric buses, with anticipated benefits for both the economy and the environment.

“The vision for the future is to integrate our services with other modes of public transportation, including cable cars, subways, monorails, trains, and road corridors,” González stated.

These remarks were made during González’s participation in the XXII Latin American Congress of Public and Urban Transportation, themed “Sustainable Mobility, Intermodality, and Equity.” The event brought together national, regional, and municipal transportation authorities, operators, consultants, educators, university students, and other stakeholders interested in transportation, transit, and mobility.

The congress, hosted by the Dominican Republic this year, is scheduled to take place from April 9 to 12, 2024, at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) and is co-organized with the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (INTRANT).
