At least 30 tremors recorded in Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico

Santo Domingo.– The National Seismology Center (CNS) reported that it has verified 9 tremors in Dominican territory on Sunday, with magnitudes between 2.2 and 3.4.

According to data released on the X network by meteorologist Jean Suriel, in the last 24 hours tremors have been activated between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, with at least 30 tremors recorded between both nations, most of them in the neighboring island of Encanto.

The CNS disseminates the latest earthquakes recorded in the Dominican Republic, which are detected through a network of seismometers strategically located throughout the country, with a greater concentration in areas considered to be at high risk.

Sharing the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, the Dominican Republic sits on a geologically active zone. This zone, known as the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault line, is a series of faults that can cause earthquakes. Since the Dominican Republic lies along this fault line, earthquakes are a natural hazard in the country. Their frequency may vary, but it’s important for everyone to be aware of the risks.
