German Embassy and Happy Dolphins sign agreement to train lifeguards and swim instructors

Santo Domingo.- The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Santo Domingo and the non-profit foundation Happy Dolphins of Cabarete have established a strategic partnership to enhance safety and uplift coastal communities in three major tourist regions. The “Saving Lives” initiative aims to train young people as lifeguards and swim instructors in Samaná, Punta Cana, and Sosúa|Cabarete, while also creating new, dignified job opportunities.

This program will equip 70 young people with lifesaving and swimming skills to help reduce water accidents and drownings. The initiative includes financial support from the German government, provided through its embassy, to address the basic needs of individuals from low-income backgrounds and improve their living conditions.

The agreement was signed at the German Embassy in Santo Domingo by Katrin Werdemann, Deputy Head of Mission; Janna Krenz, Economic Attaché; and Patricia Hiraldo, member-founder of Happy Dolphins.

Patricia Hiraldo remarked, “This effort is incredibly significant for the communities involved in the training. We hope it signals the start of a strong partnership to create safer destinations, more empowered communities, and a new lifesaving culture on our island.”

She also noted, “We have trained over 100 young people across the country to drastically reduce drowning rates. Given that tourism is a major part of our economy, it is concerning that about 8 out of 10 Dominicans cannot swim. We hope this initiative will inspire others.” Hiraldo expressed her gratitude to Maike Friedrichsen, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Germany, for supporting the project.
