Abinader confirms monitoring of Haitian border gangs

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader indicated on Monday, during La Semanal, that the presence of Haitian gangs near the border is well-known to the Dominican government, and authorities have been monitoring the situation for some time.

“This is nothing new. The gang has been there for a long time, a few kilometers from the border with Jimaní, and we are monitoring their location. For a long time, vehicles with merchandise could not pass through Jimaní,” said Abinader.

Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille recently held a working session with the director of the Haitian National Police (PNH), Rameau Normil, to devise a strategy following an attack by an armed group in the city of Ganthier.

Last weekend, the armed group known as 400 Mawozo, led by Wilson Joseph, alias ‘Lanmò 100 jou,’ attacked Ganthier and reportedly took control of the Malpasse customs annex. In a video, the gang leader boasted of his exploits, showing the burning of the customs house and an armored police vehicle, along with several dozen heavily armed youths accompanying him in his crimes.
