Controversial traffic light contract sparks dispute between former and current officials

Santo Domingo.- Former director of the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (Intrant), Hugo Beras, criticized multiple control agencies for failing in the tendering process for a traffic light modernization contract in Greater Santo Domingo. In response, Carlos Pimentel, director of Purchases and Contracts, defended his institution, stating that the tender was annulled five times due to irregularities.

Pimentel explained that the Directorate of Public Procurement and Contracting issued five resolutions canceling the documentation and permanently disqualified the involved company, referring the case to the Attorney General’s Office. He also expressed willingness to provide further information to legal authorities and believes a trial would reveal more details about the case, which was exposed through Operation Chameleon.

Beras, speaking before his recent arrest, claimed his team complied with regulations, made efforts for transparency, and included oversight from ethics and contracting agencies. He noted that 20 companies initially registered, with Transcore Latam, linked to Jochi Gómez, ultimately winning the contract.
