Customs increases Christmas exemption for Dominicans abroad by 30%

Santo Domingo.- From December 1, 2024, to January 15, 2025, Dominicans living abroad will be allowed to bring gifts and personal items worth up to US$5,000 to their relatives in the country, exempt from tariffs. This marks a 30% increase in the exemption limit, as announced by the General Director of Customs, Eduardo Sanz Lovatón.

Sanz Lovatón highlighted that this extended benefit, which is the most significant and longest-lasting in history, aims to reward the Dominican diaspora for their contributions and ties to the country. The exemption applies to items brought by both air and sea travelers, with conditions that the total value of goods does not exceed US$5,000, is not in commercial quantities, and includes only one unit of each item, particularly for household appliances.

This special Christmas exemption is available to Dominicans who have been abroad for at least six months and applies per family. It is part of the government’s effort to honor the sacrifices and ongoing support of the Dominican diaspora.
