Bundle up! Jean Suriel warns of more chilly days ahead

Santo Domingo.- Temperatures in the Dominican Republic have dropped significantly over the past three days due to the influence of cold front number 12 and a polar air mass. Meteorologist Jean Suriel described the phenomenon as a “friito” (cold snap), which is expected to persist nationwide for the next 72 hours. Northeasterly winds from the North Atlantic have intensified the chill, particularly in mountainous areas and the Cibao region, where nighttime and early morning temperatures are at their lowest.

While the current polar air mass is forecasted to move away by Tuesday afternoon, cold front number 13 is set to arrive on Wednesday, bringing another polar mass that will keep temperatures low through the weekend. Additionally, cold fronts 14 and 15, along with two more polar masses, are expected to impact the region on January 15 and 19, extending the cold spell.

Experts predict this tropical winter could be one of the coldest in the past decade, marking a rare climatic event for the Caribbean. Gusty winds and continued cooling are anticipated, with high-pressure systems further influencing weather conditions in the coming days.
