Faride Raful proposes amendments to traffic law for mandatory fine payments

Santo Domingo.- Traffic accidents in the Dominican Republic continue to be a major concern, with authorities actively seeking solutions to reduce these incidents. One significant factor contributing to the problem is the failure to comply with Traffic and Mobility Law 63-17, which results in not only human and material losses but also a high economic burden on the country, particularly affecting hospital budgets due to the medical care needed for accident victims.
In response to this issue, Minister of the Interior and Police Faride Raful has proposed an amendment to the law, aiming to make the payment of fines for traffic violations mandatory. Currently, the law allows drivers to request the expiration of fines through a specialized court if a year has passed since the violation. Raful’s proposal focuses on eliminating this provision to ensure fines are paid promptly, arguing that without an effective sanctioning system, violators are able to avoid responsibility.
Obviously, but with the corrupt police, they might negotiate the ticker in person and avoid the write-up altogether. Until there is accountability from all government sectors, the issues will not be addressed.
