Mayor of Samaná denounces irregular land ownership on seawall

Samaná.- Nelson Núñez, mayor of Samaná and president of the Dominican Federation of Municipalities (Fedomu), has warned national and local authorities about an irregular land allocation that could harm the area and the country’s tourism sector.

Núñez revealed that land designated as a green area on the Samaná seawall was improperly awarded to private individuals through a sanitation ruling. The disputed property, covering over 4,400 square meters, was expropriated by the Dominican State under a 1970 decree issued by then-President Joaquín Balaguer. Despite this, individuals Carlos Manuel Báez Gerónimo, Yomar Báez Gerónimo, Jairo Ricardo Acosta Alonzo, and Jerry Roberto Acosta Alonzo were granted certification of ownership.

The mayor has filed a motion for review with the San Francisco de Macorís Superior Land Court, citing fraud, with a hearing set for July 4. He urges the General Directorate of National Assets and other state entities to join the appeal to prevent the land’s privatization, ensuring it remains for public and tourism use.
