Abinader reaffirms commitment to security
Santiago, D.R.- President Luis Abinader reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating crime and strengthening public security during the opening of the Eighth Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Public Security in the Americas (MISPA VIII), held in Santiago. Addressing delegates from 28 countries, he emphasized that “crime never sleeps” and stressed the need for constant vigilance and data-driven decision-making.
Abinader noted that his government meets weekly to review the national crime heat map, a strategy that contributed to lowering the homicide rate from 9.6 per 100,000 in 2024 to 8.2 by mid-2025. He also announced plans to submit a comprehensive Police Reform bill to Congress on August 16, aiming to modernize the force in educational, operational, and administrative areas. He cited urban inequality as a major driver of crime and pointed to Santiago’s Yaque del Norte transformation as a successful case of crime reduction through urban renewal.

That’s all well and good but the one thing missing are the Pesos. Crime will not go down as fast as they would like it if people are hungry because we all know that people with money in their pocket, and food in their belly would calm them down. Quality of life insecurity is an issue that needs to be addressed. But this is good to see.
