Most studied careers in the Dominican Republic
In the Dominican Republic, the most frequently studied majors reflect both the needs of the labor market and the incentives generated by current institutions and regulations. According to the most recent data from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCYT), in 2024, the major with the highest number of enrollments was medicine, with 41,095 students, followed by accounting (36,535) and law (33,962).
The predominance of professions such as law and accounting is likely due to the country’s complex bureaucracy and tax system, which forces households and businesses to seek specialists constantly. In the case of medicine, its popularity is largely due to the benefits and protections it receives from professional associations.
An important aspect not reflected in the graph is the importance of the education field, which, because it is divided into multiple programs, does not appear in the top 10 individual programs. However, when all its branches are combined, it reaches 56,332 enrolled students, making it one of the fields with the highest number of students. Its high enrollment is also explained by the labor and union benefits that professionals in this sector receive.
In contrast, science and technology-related programs show weak participation. For example, Computer Engineering has 11,018 students enrolled, while science —which encompasses fields such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry—has only 4,170 students.
This reality underscores the need for institutions that mitigate distortions and foster an environment where young people can concentrate their education on areas that genuinely enhance innovation, productivity, and sustainable economic development.
