Santo Domingo.- In an interview on El Show del Mediodía, President Luis Abinader addressed recent corruption cases, admitting he has felt “disappointed and betrayed” by individuals within his inner circle. He emphasized that the Public Prosecutor’s Office operates independently and stated that those found guilty should face prison and return stolen funds.
Abinader noted that corruption cases should not be ignored, arguing that concern arises when none are detected. He stressed that his administration seeks to prevent wrongdoing and ensure accountability when it occurs. The president also highlighted institutional efforts, including constitutional protections against re-election and pending reforms such as social security and police modernization.
On economic matters, he pointed to progress in the electricity sector, including upcoming improvements in power generation and the expansion of renewable energy with storage systems. He added that distribution companies have been depoliticized and are undergoing investment upgrades. Addressing global economic pressures, Abinader reaffirmed that the government has implemented austerity measures to control price increases and expressed confidence in overcoming the current crisis.
The president made these remarks following the inauguration of a new four-lane entrance road to Samaná, a project that includes upgraded infrastructure such as lighting, drainage systems, and improved traffic safety features.
