US and DR agreement for labor rights for Dominican workers

Washington.- The United States Department of Labor and the Embassy of the Dominican Republic, representing the Dominican Government, have entered into an agreement to promote the labor rights of Dominican workers in the United States.

The pact was officially signed by Ambassador Sonia Guzmán and Thea Lee, the US Undersecretary of Labor.

This agreement marks a significant milestone in ensuring that Dominican workers in the United States fully understand their labor rights as outlined in legislation. It signifies a collaborative effort between the United States labor authorities, the embassy, and the respective Dominican consulates.

Ambassador Sonia Guzmán emphasized the commitment of President Abinader’s government to protecting the rights of Dominican nationals beyond the borders of their homeland. She expressed the importance of this alliance in reinforcing the promotion and protection of labor rights for Dominicans.

Guzmán noted that this partnership reflects the strong political will of both governments to implement programs aimed at supporting the Dominican community working across the United States, which currently represents the fourth largest Latino population in the nation.

Deputy Assistant Secretary Thea Lee underscored the significance of the partnership, stating that it will ensure Dominican citizens working in the United States are aware of the protections afforded by US labor laws. This includes rights to a safe and healthy workplace and the right to receive full compensation for their work.

Lee further emphasized that Dominican workers should be aware of their ability to freely exercise their labor rights, have a voice in their workplaces, and actively participate in the country’s robust economy.

The signing ceremony took place at the Frances Perkins Building, the headquarters of the Department of Labor in Washington DC, United States of America.
