Prosecutor: Motion to acquit ex-Public Works chief a ‘desperate act’

Santo Domingo.- National District 4th Instruction Court judge Ramon Lambertus on Wednesday recused himself from the case against former Public Works minister Víctor Díaz Rúa, for alleged embezzlement and money laundering.

At once National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso, who attended the hearing, called the motion by Diaz’s attorneys a “desperate act."

She said it’s "totally absurd" to ask the investigating judge to halt an investigation because it violates every procedure of the indictment against Diaz, citing articles 22 and 281 of the criminal procedure code.

"In other words for us it’s an act of desperation of the accused against the investigation," the Prosecutor said.
