Leonel Fernández questions inconsistencies in migration policies

Santo Domingo.- Former Dominican President Leonel Fernández has increased his criticism of the immigration policies under President Luis Abinader, denouncing inconsistencies in border management and visa issuance to Haitian citizens. Using the X platform (formerly Twitter), Fernández argued that these issues threaten national sovereignty, citing official data that shows a dramatic reduction in border crossings compared to previous years.

According to the General Directorate of Migration, only 9,064 people entered the Dominican Republic through the border in 2024, compared to previous records of 265,000 to over 330,000. Fernández questioned the credibility of these numbers, suggesting potential irregularities in immigration control and asking, “How can the authorities explain it?”

He also highlighted concerns raised by Listín Diario about a black market in Haiti for Dominican visas, urging the government to investigate. As public scrutiny grows, the opposition leader’s allegations have left many awaiting an official response from the Abinader administration.

During his terms in office, he had opportunities to remove immigration inconsistencies, nothing concrete was done.

He questions but offers no remedy.

This is the same man who started this wave of illegal Haitians in 1996 after Balaguer left office. And now he wants to excuses himself from the nonsenses that he and his party created. The same man that give 50 million dollars from Dominican taxpayers to build a university in Haiti and was almost killed when he went to inaugurate the school. Leonel Fernandez is one of the worst president Dr has ever had.

Building a university for them wasn’t a bad thing, at the very least it’s served them and they have actually put it to use. What I do criticize vehemently is the shitty and incompetent approach that our leaders and politicians have taken towards the immigration problem. DR needs to implement a tight border like the one between North Korea & South Korea.
