Major opposition party edges closer to a chasm

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s major opposition party (PRD) edge closer to a chasm on Monday when ex president and former candidate Hipólito Mejía’s supporters ratcheted their demand for the organization’s president Miguel Vargas’s resignation for his alleged role in its recent defeat.

Mejía met yesterday with senior PRD leaders including Hugo Tolentino Dipp, who revealed they’ll “convene the echelons” to draft a document against Vargas after his “closest aides had conspired against Hipólito Mejía in the campaign.”

Some leaders said they’ll meet again Friday in afternoon to seek the adequate mechanisms for expulsion.

Vargas counters

But Vargas’ supporters fought back with a gathering of 23 legislators and a press conference in the hotel Embajador.

Vargas spokesman Victor Gomez Casanova said 42 of the PRD’s 73 deputies acknowledge him as their president and organization leader, “in the face of the threat lurking against the peace and harmony of the PRD rank ad file.”
