Police call major bridge’s cut cables “urban terrorism,” vows arrests

Santo Domingo.- The National Police yesterday called the cutting of Juan Pablo Duarte bridge’s tensioning cables by unidentified metal thieves "an act of urban terrorism" which "could trigger an unexpected tragedy."

Police spokesman Maximo Baez said several people have been detained for questioning but couldn’t reveal the names in the widening investigation.

He vowed to apprehend the thieves for the monetary losses to the country and the threat posed to the thousands motorists every day. "We will locate these people, who can be classed as urban terrorists, to capture them and bring them to justice."

Baez said around nine people have been charged several times after being caught cutting the cables in several bridges.
