Arrest warrant issued for lawmaker convicted of statutory rape

Santo Domingo.- A National District sentencing judge issued a warrant to arrest deputy Ramon Antonio Fernandez, sentenced to one year in prison for statutory rape.

Judge Saul I. Diaz ordered the arrest of the Santiago Rodriguez province lawmaker on August 27, to serve time on the Supreme Court conviction to one year in Najayo prison, but reduced to six months.

The judge’s ruling states that the convict’s filing of an appeal doesn’t suspend the execution of the sentence.

The Chamber of Deputies set a precedent in 2005 when it stripped opposition PRD lawmaker Radhamés Ramos García (El Chino) of his parliamentary immunity, on charges of trafficking Chinese nationals, while he was the consul in Cape Haitien.
