Groups announce peaceful, nationwide strike Tuesday

Santo Domingo. – Several transport unions, community organizations and neighborhood groups announced a nationwide strike on Tuesday, November 6 and promised it will be peaceful.

Organizations spokesman Ramon Perez Figuereo said the strike will be held throughout the country, to protest against the government’s proposed tax package, the increase in fuel prices and on food staples.

"We’re calling for a national work stoppage for Nov. 6 against the economic policy of Danilo Medina’s government, which will further stifle the Dominican family with new taxes which will cause excessive increases in all mass consumption products," the union leader said.

In a press conference, the also president of the Transporters Union (CNTU) said tomorrow Wednesday they’ll support the call to "Honk against the package" to start the days of protest.
