Déjà vu: Damaged bridge halts traffic to the South

Bani, Dominican Republic.- Traffic to and from the entire South region was halted as of 6am Friday, when a bridge ramp collapsed on the Bani-Azua span of the interprovincial highway.

It’s the second time in as many months that rains destroy the structure of the bridge called Los Pilones; the first in August by Tropical Storm Isaac’s downpours.

In this occasion the Ocoa river tore off around 20 meters (around 62 feet) of the west side ramp, as a result of the hurricane. Public Works crews are on the scene waiting for the high water to subside, to restore traffic.

The damage comes despite an August 25 pledge by president Danilo Medina to seek a definitive solution after Isaac washed away the same structure.
