‘Insolent’ U.S. envoy again riles Dominican Republic powers

Santo Domingo.- As expected, response came swiftly to U.S. ambassador James Brewster’s statement Tuesday cautioning the Dominican Republic against having “so much power” concentrated in just one political party.

The diplomat’s statement was rebuffed by ruling PLD party Chamber of Deputies spokesman Ruben Maldonado, who called Brewster “insolent.”

Quoted by CDN Channel 37, the lawmaker reminded Brewster that the Presidency is of the PLD, has a majority in both chambers of Congress and in most of the municipalities because the popular vote.

Speaks freely

Brewster’s gay activism and often controversial statements has earned him powerful adversaries such as Dominican Republic’s Catholic Church and the Evangelical Unity Council.
