Old ID card no longer valid after Saturday in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.– People who have not renewed the Electoral Identity Card will not be able to make any banking transaction or legal and business negotiations, since the old ID card (cedula) expires today, Saturday 10th.

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) said, however, that the service to renew the old ID card will continue after the January 10 deadline, and assured it will be provided for free.

Recently, JCE PR director Felix Reyna said the cedula centers will remain open in order to issue the new Dominican ID. "It is important for the population to know this information," he pointed out.

"The JCE will not certify those who have not registered their biometric data. No financial institution will want to provide their services to them," JCE president Roberto Rosario said. He added that there are still around two million people who haven´t renewed their documents yet.
