Dominican eye doctor linked to Menendez corruption case could leave jail

Santo Domingo.– Dominican ophthalmologist Salomon Melgen, who has been linked to the corruption case involving Sen. Robert Menendez, will be allowed to post bond and leave jail pending his trial on charges he bilked Medicare out of $105 million, nj.com.

According to the outlet, which cited the Palm Beach Post, Melgen, 61, is scheduled for a hearing Monday to set the size of his bond. The ophthalmologist was indicted in April accused of operating a mutually beneficial bribery scheme with NJ senator Bob Menendez.

U.S. District Judge Kenneth Marra said Friday he was putting conditions in place to help reduce prosecutors’ fears that Melgen would flee to the Dominican Republic or seek refuge elsewhere on the globe, Palm Beach Post reported.

Melgen, born in the Dominican Republic, where he hobnobs with tycoons and powerful politicos at the famous resort Casa de Campo, is known for throwing wild parties set to live music.
