Environment releases 76 baby leatherback turtles

Santo Domingo.- The Environment Ministry on Monday released76 hatchlings of leatherback turtles in Playa Lavacam, Nisibon. La Altagracia province.

It said the group released belong to the second clutch ofeggs protected and incubated in coolers at the Ria Maimón Protection Centerlast April 24.

“The hatchlings were released by technicians from the viceministry of Protected Areas and Biodiversity headed by Andres Santana, managerof the Ria Maimon wildlife refuge in the town of Higuey,” Environment said in apress release.

It said the action is the result of its new policies onmonitoring the nesting of sea turtles in the Dominican Republic in order toprotect and conserve marine species.
