Lawmakers wrangle with questioned tax break for vehicles

At any momilll appear in the street with one of these?

Santo Domingo.- Several bills that have been submitted to Congress seeking to limit the tax exemptions for legislators to import of vehicles have been questioned by various sectors, including the Govt., because they end up benefitting third parties.

Senators Julio César Valentín and Adriano Sánchez last August drafted a bill to strike the exemptions to legislators gradually. Prior to that their colleague Tommy Galán also presented a similar initiative.

Valentín and Sánchez proposed a cap on the exemptions to one vehicle for the 2016-2020 period and a definitive ban at 2020 – 2024.

Their bill would also raise the vehicle’s FOB limit to US$75,000, whereas Galán’s proposal would limit the factory price to US$70,000 and not transferable to another person until after two years.
