Dominican Republic figures on map of trafficking victims

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic figures among the leading countries of origin of trafficking victims worldwide with 1% of those detected in nations of Central and Western Europe, while 3% of Dominicans were located in North America from 2007 to 2010.

The figures are from a study by the UN Drugs and Crime Office (UNOC) are cited in the book “Migratory profile of the Dominican Republic,” released Thurs. by the International Organization for Migration and the Interior and Police Ministry, which also notes that women and girls are the main victims of trafficking.

“That’s because the patriarchal system configures asymmetric power relations based on sex and gender, factors that favor specific forms of violence and discrimination, which in turn generates special risks and vulnerabilities in the face of the phenomenon of trafficking and the illicit trafficking of people,” the study says.
