President announces plans for a tram at Winston Churchill

Santo Domingo.- During his accountability speech, President Luis Abinader disclosed that the construction of the Winston Churchill Avenue tram, a part of the Santo Domingo Integrated Transportation System (SIT), is progressing towards the tender phase by the General Directorate of Public-Private Partnership.

Furthermore, other projects included in the tender list are the Haina-San Cristóbal train and the Santo Domingo urban train.

“In the same vein, the Santo Domingo Integrated Transportation System, announced in August 2023, has secured the resources to initiate the tender for the Santo Domingo Oeste cable car in this first quarter. This cable car, stretching from kilometer 9 to Haina, will be one of the five components of the integrated system of Santo Domingo, alongside the Churchill Avenue tram, the Haina-San Cristóbal train (in design), and the Santo Domingo urban train currently undergoing the DGAPP tender process,” stated Abinader.

The President also mentioned the imminent inauguration of the Santiago cable car on March 17, with the bidding for the construction of the Santo Domingo Oeste cable car already underway.

Recalling the project’s details, the Government had previously announced on September 27 the commencement of the “Santo Domingo Integrated Transportation System” project, aiming to enhance mobility with an investment exceeding three billion 200 million dollars.

The Santo Domingo Tram, designed for passenger transportation in urban areas, will operate on rails and surfaces. With a capacity to transport between 7,000 and 10,000 people per hour, it will traverse from the Sánchez Highway in Haina, connecting with the Santo Domingo Oeste Cable Car. The route covers Independencia Avenue and Winston Churchill Avenue, integrated into Lines 1 and 2 of the Santo Domingo Metro.

The project incorporates a tunnel interchange on Winston Churchill Avenue, mitigating traffic congestion in the city center. With an investment of 300 million dollars, the tram is expected to play a crucial role in significantly improving transportation in Santo Domingo.
