ONAMET warns of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo.- The National Meteorological Office (ONAMET) issued a report this Monday, indicating that the combination of the first tropical wave of the year and a trough will lead to increased rainfall accompanied by electrical storms and gusts of wind. These rains are expected to become more frequent and intense after noon across several towns in the provinces of La Altagracia, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, San Pedro de Macorís, La Romana, Monte Plata, Gran Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, Samaná, María Trinidad Sánchez, and Duarte. In the afternoon, they are forecasted to extend to Peravia, San José de Ocoa, Monseñor Nouel, Sánchez Ramírez, La Vega, Santiago, Santiago Rodríguez, and Espaillat, among others.
Meteorological alerts and warning levels remain in effect due to the rainfall that has already occurred and the predicted weather for the next 24 to 48 hours. This could lead to flooding of rivers, streams, ravines, and urban areas, as well as possible landslides resulting from a trough at altitude combined with the impact of the first tropical wave of the 2024 season.
Given the forecasted rainfall and the accumulation of significant precipitation, the Dominican population is advised to stay tuned for further bulletins from the National Forecast Center, especially in the provinces under weather alert and warning levels.
In the National District, there will be an increase in cloudiness with moderate to heavy downpours at times, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusts of wind.
