Abinader inaugurates highway and bridge in La Altagracia

With the start of work on the Anamuya prison, the president reaffirms his commitment to penitentiary reform and settles a historic debt with the municipality of Higüey.

La Altagracia – President Luis Abinader inaugurated this Saturday in the province of La Altagracia the Domingo Maíz road in Verón, a bridge in La Otra Banda, and started the construction of a preventive correctional center Anamuya in Higüey.

These works are in addition to the infrastructure that allows the continued improvement of the people’s quality of life.

Together with the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, the reconstruction of the Domingo Maíz road and its interconnection with Punta Cana Avenue was inaugurated, with an investment of more than RD$ 135 million.

During the ceremony, President Abinader highlighted the importance of the approval, in the last four years, of the Law of Territorial Reorganization, which he considered fundamental for the sustainability of the socio-economic and environmental development, being able to determine what can be authorized in each sector.

He added that in the next few days, the first land use plan for the municipality of Verón, which has already been approved and agreed upon, will be worked on.

He also expressed that tourism must continue to grow orderly with the support of this tourist province’s business community, merchants, and inhabitants.

On his side, Minister Collado emphasized that the Domingo Maíz road will have a positive impact, “another evidence of the clear vision of President Luis Abinader to continue strengthening the country’s most important destination, which receives most of the tourists who visit us.”

The work, a long-standing community demand, consisted of reconstructing 3.90 kilometers, divided into two sections with a variable width of Domingo Maíz street, from Las Palmas city to the north up to the intersection of the Boulevard Turístico del Este.

Bridge over Yauya Creek

Afterward, the head of state went to the community of La Otra Banda, where he inaugurated the bridge over the Yauya stream. The bridge collapsed after Hurricane Fiona and other atmospheric phenomena in 2022, but it is now more modern and safer for vehicles and pedestrians.

The Minister of Public Works, Deligne Ascensión, highlighted that this work involved an investment of more than RD$92 million and that this institution has invested more than RD$5,600 million in the whole province in four years.

This bridge is vital for communication through the road that links the communities of La Otra Banda-Cruz del Isleño, El Salado, Macao, and Nisibón. It directly impacts an area with a fertile valley considered among the first places in milk production at the national level.

In addition, this road is of great value for developing tourism in the area.

Construction begins on Preventive Correctional Center

Finally, the President and the Minister of Housing and Buildings, Carlos Bonilla, started the construction of the Preventive Correctional Center of Anamuya in Higüey, thus settling a historical debt with this municipality.

“Today we want to put an end to overcrowding, overcrowding and prison insecurity in Higüey through the construction of a dignified and safe penitentiary center. A reality that begins here and now,” said Abinader.

He added that prevention, deterrence, and reinsertion actions must be improved and addressed in a joint and coordinated manner with the collective effort to achieve the goal of a country without violence.

He highlighted his commitment to prison reform and all the goals necessary to change this country. “I will not be able to do it all at once, but, just as I fulfill today before you, I will continue working to meet all my commitments, one by one. Do not doubt it.

Meanwhile, Bonilla said that this work “is part of our commitment to the mandate of our President Luis Abinader, who has promoted an unprecedented investment in construction so that the Dominican Republic has buildings and structures of the best quality.”

The correctional center will have an administrative building, a frisk area, a sports court, a dining room, separate cells for men and women, a watchtower, a guarded entrance, a visitor’s booth, sentry boxes, garbage, and gas departments.

The following ministers were present: Igor Rodríguez, Administrative Minister of the Presidency; David Collado, Minister of Tourism; Governor Martina Pepén; Senator Virgilio Cedano; Mayor Karina Aristy; DNCD President, Vice Admiral José Manuel Cabrera Ulloa; Comipol Director, Major General Rafael Vásquez Espínola and Deputy Attorney General Rodolfo Espiñeira Ceballos.

Having the bridge back is most welcome. One can be sure the community is thrilled. The detour route was a hellish narrow bypass of steep grades and sharp turns, very difficult for cars, a headache for buses and large trucks. It was better than nothing!
